fenway park, baseball, red sox, boston, ma, stadium

In a devastating turn of events, Red Sox owner John W. Henry has announced that a new stadium will be developed for the beloved Boston Red Sox. Similar to the fate of the original Yankee Stadium, Fenway Park as we know it today will cease to exist.

Construction of the new stadium is expected to begin this fall in an undisclosed location outside of Boston, where more open space is available. The current stadium does not hold enough people, according to Henry, and additional space will be needed for parking as well as for a massive Red Sox fan shop.

Of course, the main driver of the change is a desire for more revenue. More tickets sold = more money in Henry’s pocket. Another factor is the size of the patrons. The existing seating at Fenway is frankly just not large enough to comfortably accommodate the majority of fans today. Yet another casualty of obesity in America.

In a nod to fans, pieces of the Green Monster will be auctioned off with proceeds to help fund the new stadium. The rest of Fenway will be taken down to make way for a Boston location of Madame Tussaud’s wax museum. A key component of the contract calls for the first wax figures to be of Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, and Carl Yastrzemski.

No doubt Red Sox fans will be crushed at this news…but there’s no crying in baseball. And there’s also no crying when you realize you have been duped…April Fools!! Sorry…not sorry!

  1. Oh no. That’s terrible. I’m from Western Australia and I know the iconic Fenway Park. I hate losing a bit of history like that. I would have thought that it was heritage listed to stop this from happening. I just watched a movie yesterday, Miracles from Heaven and Fenway Park was pointed out in the movie as an icon.

  2. I was pretty sure that wasn’t true and thankfully I was right. I only fell for on April Fool’s prank, a former student announcing on FB that she’d gotten engaged. Her mom was even part of it!!

  3. Ha! I was ready to send this to friends/fans to be sure to get there and/or bid! You are always so full offacts, I thought it must be true. And that obesity comment!!!

  4. I hoped it was L’ poisson d’Avril or April Fool’s Joke! Although I could see that happening. They tore down Candlestick Park for those very reasons and moved the team down here to the South Bay.

    1. Terrible about Candlestick!! Happened to Yankee Stadium too so when it comes to money you just never know. Would be horribly cruel if it happened though!

    1. I wouldn’t either, sadly!! It is on the National Register as of 2012, and Boston fans would flip out so I hope it’s safe. But I bet Yankee fans thought their stadium was safe, too!

  5. You didn’t get me on that one – Bostonians would never allow it, but nice try 😉
An excellent choice for Thursday Doors subject though 😀

    1. I have to agree with you! I would be crushed if it ever happen and I’m not even a huge baseball fan. Just so much nostalgia there!
